Gert Desmet (°1967) has a Masters degree in chemical engineering and obtained his PhD in chemical engineering (fermentation technology) from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Brussels, Belgium, where he currently is a full professor in chemical engineering and heads the Department of Chemical Engineering. In 2012-2015, he was the vice-dean of the Faculty of Sciences and Bioengineering.
His research focuses on the miniaturization of separation methods and on the investigation and the modeling of flow effects in chromatographic systems. He is a past co-chair and chair of the Chemistry Panel of the Belgian National Science Fund (FWO) and is an Associate Editor of the journal Analytical Chemistry from the American Chemical Society. In 2016, he was rewarded an ERC Advanced Grant. He is also a member of the permanent scientific committee of the “International Symposium on High Performance Liquid Phase Separations and Related techniques” (HPLC) and the "International Symposium on Chromatography (ISC)” conference series, as well as of the SCM and HTC conference series.

Professor Alois Jungbauer received his PhD in Food Technology and Biotechnology from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna, Austria 1986. He serves since then as a professor at the Department of Biotechnology. He teaches Protein Technology and Downstream Processing and Bioprocess Engineering. He also acts as area head and Dep. Director of Research in the Austrian Centre of Industrial Biotechnology. He is currently working in the field of bioengineering of proteins, plasmids and viruses with special focus on expression, downstream processing and characterization of large biomolecules.
As a proliferate researcher he has more than 320 publications on recombinant protein production and bioseparation, 15 patents and 12 book contributions and recently a monograph entitled “Protein Chromatography , Process Development and Scale Up”. He is executive editor and co-founder of Biotechnology Journal, and member of editorial boards from numerous journals in the area of biochemical engineering. Close window |

Philipp Krastel received a bachelor degree in chemistry from the University of Kiel, Germany (1994). He then went on to obtain his masters degree majoring in organic chemistry from the University of Göttingen, Germany (1997). He received a Ph.D. from the same university (2001) specializing in natural product research. In his thesis research he investigated the metabolic profile of different endosymbionts from beetles and insects. After one year of postdoctoral training at the Institute of Biomelecular Chemistry at the University of Göttingen he started 2002 as a Research Investigator in the Natural Products Units of the Novartis Institutes of Biomedical Research in Basel focusing on the analytical and preparative characterization of secondary metabolites form microorganisms. Olivier Ludemann-Hombourger is currently the General Director of PolyPeptide Laboratories France. He is involved in the manufacturing of synthetic peptides since 2009 : He worked during three years for Lonza in Braine l’Alleud (Belgium) as head of Operations, before joining PolyPeptide Group to Manage the French entity. The site is mainly involved in the development of new APIs.
He received his PhD in 2001 from “Institut National PolyTechnique de Lorraine” in France, in collaboration with Novasep Process, for which he was leading the R&D activity during 10 years. His core scientific expertise is related to preparative chromatography processes with a specific focus on the development of multi-column technologies. He managed the development and industrialization of the VARICOL process currently applied at manufacturing scale for the production of several APIs.
He was the chairman of several Symposia, including the 14th SPICA Event in Brussels in 2012. Close window |

Dr Rosse is currently Scientific and Business Development Consultant at Dart Neuroscience and serves as Adjunct Associate Professor at Drexel University. Prior he was Associate Director at Dart NeuroScience and he functioned in leadership and scientific positions in medicinal and analytical chemistry with Cephalon, Sanofi and F. Hoffman-La Roche. During his industrial tenure, he led multidisciplinary teams and invented pre-clinical candidates for a wide range of therapeutic indications (CNS, Inflammation, Metabolism, Oncology, Antibacterial agents). Dr Rosse’s career is also characterized by the implementation of innovative chemical technology and analytical chemistry platforms based on SFC that accelerated the drug discovery process and reduced costs. Professor Tallarek studied chemistry at the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen and obtained his Dr. rer. nat. in 1998 with an NMR imaging study of the fluid dynamics in porous media. As a Marie-Curie postdoctoral fellow from 1998 to 2000 in Wageningen (The Netherlands) he developed and applied NMR tools for the in situ characterization of transport in microfluidic devices, particularly electrokinetic microfluidics. From 2000 to 2007 he was on the faculty of the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering of the Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg, where he completed his habilitation in 2004 (mentor: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Andreas Seidel-Morgenstern) and received a venia legendi for physical chemistry. Since 2007 he is professor of analytical chemistry and a member of the board of directors of the materials science center at the Philipps-Universität Marburg. His research focuses on the discovery and understanding of the fundamental morphology–functionality–transport relationships in functional porous materials, ranging from solute–surface interactions to macroscale transport. This approach relies on modern simulation methods to capture the involved widely different spatiotemporal scales and the precise physical reconstruction of porous media. Close window |

She habilitated in the field of chromatography and adsorption at Otto-von-Guericke Universitaet in Magdeburg, Germany in 2003. In 2012 she was nominated as a full professor.
Since 2014 she is a chair of Department of Chemical Engineering and Processing, Faculty of Chemistry, of Rzeszow University of Technology, Rzeszow. Since 2016 she is a dean of Faculty of Chemistry.

In 2013, returned to academic studies at UFPE and in 2017 obtained his PhD degree in Chemical Engineering, in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto (Portugal). Lucas also has a Specialization in Innovation Management and Technology Diffusion and always has been involved with themes related to research, development and Innovation. Currently, he is a Post-Doc researcher, at the Laboratory of Separation and Reaction Engineering (LSRE-LCM) working with Prof. Alírio Rodrigues, aiming the production and purification of added value compounds of industrial interest from waste raw materials.

He is author of more than 50 scientific publications and book chapters and teaches courses on enantioselective chromatographic methods and preparative HPLC.

Andreas Seidel-Morgenstern received in 1982 a Diplom in Chemical Engineering from Technische Hochschule Leuna-Merseburg and in 1987 a Ph.D. from the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin-Adlershof. In 1991 and 1992 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. In 1994 he defended a Habilitation at the Technical University Berlin. After working for the pharmaceutical company Schering in Berlin, he became in 1995 Professor for Chemical Process Engineering at the Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg. In 2002 he was appointed as a Director at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg, where he is currently head of the “Physical and Chemical Foundations of Process Engineering” department. His research interests include heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis, adsorption and preparative chromatography, crystallization and the development of new reactor concepts.

Dr Romas Skudas is currently a Senior Scientist/Lab Head within Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany Process Solutions Chromatography R&D group. He has worked at Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany since 2004 on a variety of topics, including the synthesis, characterization and modelling of separation materials and their use in economics biopharmaceutical molecule purification and characterization process. The most recent topic is biopharmaceutical molecule purification process optimization. Dr Skudas has authored several dozen journal articles, book chapters and patent publications, and he was invited to present at a range of conferences.
