Excursions

All excursions are fully booked, please contact the Symposium Secretariat to see availabilities!

EXCURSION 1: AN EUROPEAN DISTRICT IN BRUSSELS
This tour shows participants the main buildings occupied by the European institutions in Brussels: the European Commission, the European Council, the European Parliament and the Economic & Social Committee. The tour explains what these institutions do, and, above all, the issues raised by their presence in the Brussels cityscape, based on the monofunctional policy of “all offices – all cars” which was in force in the 1960s and in subsequent urban development plans. The alternative vision, put forward by local residents’ associations, (re-introducing an urban mix of housing, offices, shops and facilities, giving priority to public transport users, pedestrians and cyclists and increasing the mixture of the social classes) seems to have the upper hand today.

Price per participant: €15
Duration: 2 hours and 30 minutes
Meeting point at 15:15
Place du Luxembourg

EXCURSION 2: BEST OF BRUSSELS

This walking tour visits the major historical sites of the centre of Brussels: the Grand-Place and its surroundings, the Sablon or the Royal district. The tour demonstrates how the medieval commercial city was transformed by the neo-classical buildings and major construction projects of the nineteenth century into its present-day incarnation of a model European capital.

Price per participant: €15
Duration: 2 hours and 30 minutes
Meeting point at 15:15
Grand Place, in front of the main entrance of the City hall
1000 Brussels

EXCURSION 3: MAGRITTE MUSEUM (ROYAL MUSEUMS OF FINE ARTS)

In the building of Belgium's Royal Museums of Fine Arts, visitors can explore the 2,500 m2 of the Magritte Museum. This museum stands right in the centre of Brussels, on Place Royale, and exhibits for public viewing the surrealist artist's creations belonging to Belgium's Royal Museums of Fine Arts and originating mainly from purchases and from the Irène Hamoir-Scutenaire and Georgette Magritte bequests. This multidisciplinary collection is the richest in the world. It comprises more than 200 works consisting of oils on canvas, gouaches, drawings, sculptures and painted objects as well as advertising posters, music scores, vintage photographs and films directed by Magritte himself.

Price per participant: €20 (incl. guide and admission fees)
Duration: 1 hour and 30 minutes
